Holiday Cottages in Instow

An idyllic coastal village that exudes charm

Much like Appledore, Instow is a village with a quieter pace of life compared to other areas in North Devon. Both villages sit on opposite sides of the River Torridge, at the point at which it meets the River Taw. For this reason, Instow attracts a host of boats which can be seen moored along the beach – a fantastic view when dining al fresco at one of the many vibrant pubs and restaurants here.

Things to do in Instow, North Devon

Instow’s sandy beach is smaller than others in North Devon, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in views. Here, you’ll be able to see across the River Torridge towards the quaint and pretty Appledore and even Crow Point. The beach is also dog friendly (with some summertime restrictions) which means you can enjoy a day out with all the family, strolling along the shore, playing beach games, and exploring the dunes.

Instow is also known for its fantastic dining experiences, having become a popular food and drink hotspot over the years. There is nothing better than sitting outside one of the area’s many pubs and restaurants, sampling the local freshly caught seafood, sipping on an ice-cold drink, and watching the boats bobbing on the water.

No beach trip is complete without ice cream, and Instow is a Hocking’s ice cream hotspot! So make sure to keep an eye out for their van during your visit. You’ll also want to pop into John’s Deli, which stocks a great range of food and drink including local charcuterie, cheese, and baked goods, ideal for keeping your Instow holiday let stocked up during your stay.

If you’re looking for something to do a little further afield, Instow benefits from sitting directly on the Tarka Trail, offering the option of walking or cycling in either direction towards Barnstaple or Bideford. There is also a seasonal water taxi that operates between Appledore and Instow, an enjoyable way to experience the water and hop between the two villages. The nearby Tapeley Park is also a worthwhile day out; a stunning stately home with magical gardens to explore with sweeping views across the river and out to sea.
