Things to do in Saunton, North Devon

When visiting Saunton, the area’s number one attraction is its sweeping 3-mile-long sandy beach. Saunton Sands is the ‘movie star’ of North Devon, not just because of its imposing presence and impressive beauty, but because of its prominence as a filming location. It’s been featured in films such as The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Aquaman, The Witcher Netflix series and in many music videos for artists including Olly Murs, Pink Floyd and Robbie Williams.

Because of its expanse and gentle waves, Saunton Sands is a great beach for anyone looking to learn to surf. There are a handful of surf schools in the area, one of which is right on the beach! If windsurfing and kite surfing are more your thing, Saunton Sands also allows for this, with plenty of room for ‘tricks and twists’ and ‘catching big air’!

As well as surfers, swimmers and picnickers, the beach is popular with dog walkers too. It is one of the few beaches in the area that allows dogs (on a designated section of the beach) all year round. Is there anything better than watching your four-legged friend bounding in and out of the sand dunes and shore?

Just outside of the beach, Saunton also boasts a luxury golf club, complete with two Championship semi-links courses. Rated one of the best golf clubs in England, whiling away the day here is a must for golf enthusiasts, with the courses being surrounded by Saunton’s lush countryside.

Keen hikers will also be pleased to hear the area boasts a number of fantastic walks, including access to the South West Coast Path where you can marvel at the sights along the North Devon coast. Saunton also backs onto Braunton Burrows, a UNESCO-protected biosphere reserve and AONB (area of outstanding natural beauty).

Is Saunton Sands dog friendly?

Yes! Saunton Sands is one of the dog-friendliest beaches in North Devon, with plenty of space to exercise your four-legged companion all year round. Visitors are asked to turn left at the end of the slipway when visiting with their dog, keeping them on a lead until they are through any crowds.

Is Saunton Sands good for surfing?

Saunton Sands is a favourite among beginners right through to professional surfers. Here you’ll experience a range of tides with extended, smooth waves, ideal for longboarding. The area also offers shelter from northerly winds and can be enjoyed all year round.
